Tucked away on the Wild Coast, in the heart of Pondoland, and encompassed by rocky coastline, indigenous forests, secluded coves and breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean, lies the award winning Umngazi Hotel & Spa. The thatch-roofed bungalows are situated amongst the indigenous gardens which provide the perfect setting for totally relaxed holiday. Weekly fly-in packages are available Friday to Friday from Virginia, Durban where you fly at 500 feet above sea level along the beautiful coastline – a wonderful way to start your holiday.

From the moment we stepped on the property the treatment we received was exceptional. The facilities and the food were top notch. We can’t thank everyone enough for a fantastic end to our SA vacation.

Umngazi was always a bucket list stay. Well we did it! Amazing location, friendly people, great food. The spa should be visited (do the couples massage with the bottle of bubbly included)

Memorable holiday
Umngazi Hotel & Spa has been on our bucket list for years. We had the most memorable holiday – we booked for a week – could have stayed for another week. A truly special place — we’d love to return!
We had the most wonderful stay and couldn’t recommend this hotel highly enough, especially for a family or group getaway. We travelled as a group of 16, with family coming from as far afield as Australia and Ireland. It certainly takes a little effort to get there, but wow — it is so worth it!
From the moment we arrived, we knew the journey had been worthwhile. Our sea-facing rooms were simply dreamy. Waking up to the sound of the ocean was something very special and made the whole experience feel like a real escape. The food was absolutely delicious, with plenty of choice and more than enough for everyone. Having everything included in the price made it so easy to relax and enjoy ourselves, and we loved the anticipation of finding out what was on offer each evening. There was always something different and delicious to look forward to. The amenities and communal spaces are wonderfully spacious, so even with a large group, there was plenty of room for everyone to do their own thing. But some of our favourite moments were when we all ended up together. Our nighttime sing-songs in the bar and lounge areas were great fun, and travelling in winter made it even more magical. After dinner, there was nothing better than gathering around the fire, chatting, laughing and enjoying precious time together. It was the perfect setting for a family gathering and gave us memories that we’ll treasure for a very long time. A truly special place — we’d love to return!

Our weeks stay at Umngazi
We have just returned from our 9th visit to Umngazi, and once again, we had a truly wonderful time. Umngazi is such a beautiful, peaceful and special place to enjoy a holiday, and over the years it has created so many happy and treasured memories for us and our family.
The food, as always, was absolutely divine. A very special thank you to the Chef for the beautiful cake made for our 45th wedding anniversary. It was such a thoughtful and personal touch, and made our celebration even more memorable.
Our room and all the facilities were spotless, and the wonderful staff treated us with such kindness, warmth and care throughout our stay. That genuine hospitality is one of the many things that has kept us returning to Umngazi year after year.
We would also like to give a special mention to Jakes, who was incredibly friendly and helpful, particularly with the fishing. His willingness to assist and his wonderful personality made a real impression on us. What a great guy!
This was our 9th visit, and on four of those occasions we were delighted to bring friends and family along, paying for their stays so that they too could experience the magic of Umngazi. It has always been a place we have been proud and excited to share with the people we love.
Sadly, this visit will probably be our last holiday at Umngazi. As pensioners, we simply can no longer afford the increasing rates. This has been an extremely difficult decision for us, because Umngazi has become such a special part of our lives. Saying goodbye to a place we have loved and returned to so many times is genuinely heartbreaking.
To everyone at Umngazi, thank you for the nine wonderful visits, the excellent service, delicious food, warm hospitality and countless beautiful memories. We will always look back on our time at Umngazi with immense fondness and will treasure the memories we have made there.

We are sorry to hear that the cost of a holiday now makes returning to Umngazi difficult. We completely understand that affordability is an important consideration, particularly for those travelling on a pensioner’s budget.
For the benefit of our guests reading this review, Umngazi works hard to keep annual rate increases in line with inflation and to remain accessible to the South African market. We also offer a number of out-of-season periods, promotions and packages throughout the year, so we encourage guests to keep an eye out for these opportunities.
We very much hope this is not goodbye, and that we will have the opportunity to welcome you back to Umngazi in the future.

40th birthday trip with family
