Tucked away on the Wild Coast, in the heart of Pondoland, and encompassed by rocky coastline, indigenous forests, secluded coves and breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean, lies the award winning Umngazi Hotel & Spa. The thatch-roofed bungalows are situated amongst the indigenous gardens which provide the perfect setting for totally relaxed holiday. Weekly fly-in packages are available Friday to Friday from Virginia, Durban where you fly at 500 feet above sea level along the beautiful coastline – a wonderful way to start your holiday.

From the moment we stepped on the property the treatment we received was exceptional. The facilities and the food were top notch. We can’t thank everyone enough for a fantastic end to our SA vacation.

Umngazi was always a bucket list stay. Well we did it! Amazing location, friendly people, great food. The spa should be visited (do the couples massage with the bottle of bubbly included)

Respite for the Soul
Such a special place. Where the outside world ceases to exist, if you so wish it. Long life breathing walks along an endless beach…dinner under a celestial sky, who could ask for more! Don’t forget the great food and last but most certainly not least, the amazing staff compliment. Such a pleasure to wake up in the morning and see their friendly faces. Safety
Be warned of stray dogs that enter the resort. Our son was licked in the eye by a stray dog, if it was not for the local staff that went out of their way to help us we could not say for sure if we would have made it in time for the first rabies injection. We felt that Umngazi did not take it as seriously as they should have or go out of their way to assist in this case, this has now resulted in additional costs for the remaining shots. Rabies can be fatal and the situation should have been made a priority. Very disappointing for such an establishment.

There are better places…
Beautiful place to visit, location is amazing. Hotel facilities are good, some needs a little TLC but on a whole the hotel and activities are great. roads to get to the hotel are not good- would consider fly in and shuttle. Service from all staff is terrible, the food is ok… very limited. During our stay multiple people had to ask for something they could eat as they didn’t eat what was served – including gluten intolerant and vegetarians that had phoned ahead and checked but nothing was prepared. Overall – it is a beautiful place and can be a lot of fun with family and friends but definitely not worth the money – there are more beautiful places with amazing service/food and facilities to explore.

Great holiday, best for kids with pockets of disappointment
Umngazi is a truly special and beautiful place. This was our first visit, and it will certainly not be our last. The beach is incredible—we hiked, took long walks along the shore, swam in the sea, went fishing, and paddled in the river.
The scheduled children’s activities were great fun, and my children had the best time. The food was good, varied, and plentiful, and my massage was one of the best I’ve ever had. The rooms are also absolutely lovely.
That said, we did find the service somewhat disappointing. Staff were often unable to answer questions about activities or assist with organising guided options like hikes, and the general attitude sometimes felt disinterested. The front desk, in particular, was not very helpful. While the lunchtime salads were delicious and creative, dinner service was slow—we were frequently left waiting, and on several occasions had to get up to find someone to assist us or bring the next course.
Our final bill also included a number of items we had not consumed. When we queried this, the response was not very helpful, and receipts for those items could not be provided. The total was close to R1000, although these charges were eventually removed.
On a positive note, Jakes and Sbu stood out for their helpfulness and warm, engaging manner.
Overall, we had a wonderful stay in a beautiful setting, but felt that the service did not quite match the standard of the rest of the experience. I do however, still strongly recommend Umngazi and we will return for sure!
