Tucked away on the Wild Coast, in the heart of Pondoland, and encompassed by rocky coastline, indigenous forests, secluded coves and breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean, lies the award winning Umngazi Hotel & Spa. The thatch-roofed bungalows are situated amongst the indigenous gardens which provide the perfect setting for totally relaxed holiday. Weekly fly-in packages are available Friday to Friday from Virginia, Durban where you fly at 500 feet above sea level along the beautiful coastline – a wonderful way to start your holiday.

From the moment we stepped on the property the treatment we received was exceptional. The facilities and the food were top notch. We can’t thank everyone enough for a fantastic end to our SA vacation.

Umngazi was always a bucket list stay. Well we did it! Amazing location, friendly people, great food. The spa should be visited (do the couples massage with the bottle of bubbly included)

Where the cows come home

It’s with a heavy heart to write a bad review about such a breathtaking place.
We booked the delux honeymoon suite for five nights and on day four were asked to move to a normal bungalow as they double booked our room.
That means check out by 10am and only have a room available again at 14:00. Four hours of nothing?
Communication was non existent, asked on three occasions to speak to a manager. Nothing was offered not even an apology.
Eventually just checked out a day early and let the circus carry on.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are truly sorry to read that your departure experience left you feeling disappointed, particularly as you mention you otherwise enjoyed your stay with us.
For clarity, your reservation was confirmed on our Linger Longer promotion for four nights (pay for three), with a confirmed departure date of 19 February. When an additional night was inadvertently paid, at your request, our reservations team processed the refund accordingly.
When you later enquired about extending your stay by an additional night, our team was pleased to advise that we could accommodate this, although it would have required a move to an alternative suite due to existing incoming reservations. At the time, this arrangement was acknowledged and accepted.
We would like to reassure you that your original suite was not double booked. As is standard hotel practice, a room move and the brief interval between checkout and check-in times may be required when extending a stay at short notice. As you were offered to move to another suite, you would have enjoyed access to the Emlonyeni Private Lounge and Pooldeck, while your room was being prepared.
That said, we are genuinely sorry that the situation ultimately left you feeling frustrated or uncared for. This is never our intention, and our General Manager did hope to resolve the misunderstanding with you personally on the morning of departure.
We do appreciate your kind comments about the beauty of Umngazi and are grateful that you chose to spend your holiday with us.

A little piece of paradise
Probably don’t want to write a great review because this is a little secret gem that exists in South Africa that we probably want to keep to ourselves. The beach is pristine, beautiful and peaceful. The sand white and soft, The river…lazy, relaxing and full of bird life. The food… tasty, comforting and fresh. The Spa – Exquisite…went more than once:)

Give it some time.
Undergoing serious renovations, the redone room we were in was really well done and comfortable, the lounges you can see money has been well spent. On the dining, new cutlery shines. Plates could get hotter but it is a family venue so kids might not be able to deal with that. New dining chairs (unfortunately they are white and have grubby hand prints on the back already) are comfortable and look strong. Food is very good, it is a buffet, there is a lot to choose from, too much for the average person. Set mains menu are predictably pre-prepared and fast in coming. The cheese board for those without a sweet tooth leave much to be derired.
The pool as well maintained as ever. Bad -Throwing in chlorine whilst having cocktails nearby does however spoil the cocktail. The wooden sliding folding doors on the communal deck spaces are jammed and cannot be opened to full extent if at all. On the not so good side, the Staff let it down. Only on our 3rd day there did someone bother to come and ask us if we wanted a drink. Drinks service at the bar is slow and confusing. The room allocation on slips is not dealt with, it is duplicated by request and then not even on the slip when issued and the tip amount on each and every slip haunts you when to be fair an all inclusive trip like this should be spread. Reception has a tip jar to be shared amongst all staff or it can be an option on the main bill. I would like to see a review in a years time.

We would like to gently clarify that we are not currently undergoing major renovations; rather, we have been carrying out ongoing maintenance and enhancements, including some new decking and routine thatching, as part of our commitment to keeping Umngazi looking its best.
Regarding the communal deck doors, these were intentionally designed so that alternate sections remain fixed to provide essential structural support during strong coastal winds, in line with engineering guidance. That said, we appreciate your feedback and understand how this may have been perceived from a guest perspective.
Your comments regarding service have been noted with concern. Warm, attentive hospitality is something we pride ourselves on, and it is disappointing to hear that this was not consistently your experience. Please be assured that your feedback has been shared with our management team for review and follow-up.

Wow
This is an amazing place is was just what we needed! It was quite far above our usual budget, but we needed to take some time out and this was an incredible way to do it. The food is superb, staff are incredible and the place is run really well.
Something that we really loved, was that after the guests all finish the meals, the staff came to eat. I think this is an amazing touch, and a place that looks after their staff like this carries an atmosphere that makes the whole place feel light and friendly.
